When choosing cookware for our home we have tried it all. We have used cast iron that has been in our family for decades. We have bought the cheap non stick sets from various big box stores. We even purchased a stainless steel set and most recently hard anodized set from a home shopping network. I have yet to find anything that has cooked as well as our families cast iron.
I had the chance recently to try out the newest cookware from Xtrema. I received a 10” open stock skillet.
It arrived the same day that I was going to cook spaghetti, perfect! I washed it and used it for dinner that night. I had no problems frying up my hamburger meat, no sticking or anything, dinner was good. Good first impression.
The second night I fried up some river potatoes. And for those of you out there that don’t know, river potatoes are just cubed up potatoes fried in a little bit of oil with salt and pepper. I had major problems with them sticking. So much in fact I had to switch skillets mid way through. Zack thought that it might have been the potatoes having so much starch in them. So let’s just say it was the potatoes.
Third use. We ate breakfast the other night and Zack fried up some eggs. The first one he did was sunny side up, no sticking. Ok, so maybe it was the potatoes. Then the kids wanted scrambled eggs. They stuck just like the potatoes did.
I don’t think they we did anything wrong, we have a glass top stove and waited the allotted time before placing the skillet on the stove. We used oil when it was necessary, we cooked in this skillet just like we did the others that we have.
Although Xtrema cookware is “green”, we aren’t impressed with the performance.
Not to mention the cookware is supposed to be completely scratch proof. You can use steel wool to Comet to clean your Xtrema cookware with. Although we didn’t have steel wool, we did use Comet. We do have a small scratch. Now, I have no idea where the scratch came from because we can’t pinpoint when we first saw it. It must have happened when the potatoes stuck and we tried scrapping them out. It was fairly hard to clean the stuck on food out of the skillet. Unlike other sets we have had in the past you can usually wipe out the burnt after it cools off, but from our experience it wasn’t that easy.
It seems to me that we have had a bad experience with this cookware. However, this was our experience and it may or may not be yours. It’s up to you if you want to purchase this cookware for your family.
Seeing as we are all going “green” and Xtrema is green this might be a choice for you.
